Some neighbors offer a cup of sugar. For Marty Kubicki, it was a new passion. When the Chicago native moved to California, it was into a home across the street from ceramics artists, who soon coaxed him into leaving his electronics career to join their budding ceramic jewelry business. He started learning about clay and became hooked by this fascinating, flexible medium. Eventually, he started designing his own decorative accessories and experimenting with different types of clay and forms. When a collector showed him an antique lithophane, Marty was amazed by the intricate detail these delicate carvings produced when lit from behind. He was also amazed that such a beautiful art form had disappeared, and so he now dedicates himself to creating these extraordinary works.
