Alphabet Soup for the Soul

Artist Ilene Gold paints with paper, assembling colorful snippets into images that are deliciously fluid and expressive. In this piece, she has cooked up a tribute to the kind of wisdom gained around the dinner table. She uses a palette of warm, savory colors to conjure up a bowl of soup, with alphabet noodles spelling out the words, "Be nice." Not only is that classic message relevant today, it's also a subtle tribute to Ilene's motheróBernice. "Throw away the R, and that's who she is!," she says. This print of her original collage is made using archival paper. Made in Oregon.

Ilene Gold sold her first painting at just 10 years old. A student of fine arts, design, and advertising, she creates collages entirely from her collection of National Geographic magazines. She captures a painterly quality in the process, as if she's painting with paper itself. Look closely, and you may find a hidden word or phrase within each of her compositions. Thanks to this inventive approach, her collages have been selected for several juried art shows and solo exhibitions.
