Loving Spoonful

When you're with someone you love, the whole world just seems like a better place. These playful pairs of unisex bracelets are not only a fun way to celebrate your perfect partnership, but they actually do make the world a little better. Each "coin" charm is hand cast in Laos from reclaimed scrap aluminum. They're illustrated and labeled with either "big spoon" or "little spoon", suggesting the closeness of two spoons nestled in a drawer. The charms are laced onto a long, waxed cord that you secure in place by wrapping it around your wrist several times.

The Laotian tradition of working with scrap metals began in the 1960s as the United States conducted an extended bombing campaign in their effort to contain Communism in South Asia. An estimated 250 million American bombs were dropped in the region over a 9-year period. Attempting to restore order in their lives, the Laotian people began gathering the discarded metal from mortar and flare launchers, spent ammunition magazines and more, and recast them into spoons and other domestic tools.

Now, the creation of these bracelets not only provides you with a unique, romantic accessory, but also continues to clear waste metals from Laos, while providing local crafts people with a sustainable income. Comes in a drawstring pouch with a card explaining the metal's history. Bomb charm made in Laos; assembled in New York, NY.

“Jewelry has personal significance. We see [ours] as having that significance. It is a piece of history. It's a symbol of people turning something bad into something good.”

Elizabeth Suda originally traveled to Laos to research the country’s colorful textiles. But once there, another local craft caught her attention instead: spoons made by Lao artisans, using scrap metal salvaged from some 270 million bombs that were dropped on the country during the Vietnam War. Believing there was a broader market opportunity to be explored, Elizabeth challenged local artisans to expand beyond kitchen utensils and use the bomb metal to make jewelry instead.

“Jewelry has a personal significance–from an engagement ring to a men’s watch that might be a gift for graduation,” Elizabeth says. “We see [our] jewelry as having that significance. It is a piece of history. It’s a symbol of people turning something bad into something good.”

I got these bracelets for my boyfriend and I. I find these really cute, but for the price I would expect them to be better quality. Mine has held up pretty well, aside form the slight fraying on the end, but my boyfriends is discolored and is fraying quite a bit. Overall they're good bracelets, but they're overpriced for what you get so it is slightly disappointing.

Very cute, but questionable quality

My daughter purchased these for Valentines Day for her boyfriend. They are super cute, unique idea, he loved it. However, after only 3 months, since the bracelet is only made out of material and does not have a clasp, the ends of the material started fraying and the color faded rapidly. Uncommon goods was terrific to deal with and replaced the item in a timely matter. Not sure if it was a faulty original set or if it will happen again, time will tell, but it's great to know that they will stand by their products no matter what, and either replace it again or refund the purchase.

Love them, bought for my daughter and I, not a couple

I know this product is intended for a couple however I purchased it because my daughter, who recently graduated from college and works in the maritime industry and often out to sea for months at a time and I wear it....I am the big spoon and she the little spoon...she wears it on her ankle and I on my wrist.....we are very close and it is a symbol of our bond even when we are apart. I suppose that is corny but......you could advertise that it is not ONLY for couples...you might sell more! :) thank you

Very cute

Yes very cute my hubby calls me little spoon and he's my big spoon so it was a perfect gift. My only complain is that it's difficult to put on. For the price I paid it should have a easier clip than tying. Also a bit overpriced.

I love these bracelets

I wear my bracelet all the time. To work, to school, to sleep. All the time. It's a unique talking piece and almost no one else has this kind of jewelry. My boyfriend is currently in Basic Training and I will be giving him his bracelet at his graduation. Both of us can wear nearly identical pieces without being girly/manly. This holds a personal significance for us since we nicknamed each other the Big and Little Spoon in our relationship. The ONLY problem that I've had with it is that I have tiny wrists and often have extra room on the bracelet and the charm will kind of pull away from me just because of gravity. However, that's my tiny wrists, not the product itself. 10/10 would recommend

I love the bracelet, it was a perfect gift. My only wish is that it had some sort of clasp to attach it together instead of tying. Otherwise its perfect!
